An Analysis of On-line Music Artist Networks

چکیده
Introduction In this work we begin to examine the relationship between online social networks and music. We are interested in using online social networks to determine relationships between artists (musicians). This information could have applications in computational musicology studies and music recommendation systems. But are online social networks truly meaningful in the context of music studies?

Musical Influence Network Analysis and Rank of Sample-Based Music
Computational analysis of musical influence networks and rank of sample-based music is presented with a unique outside examination of the WhoSampled.com dataset. The exemplary dataset maintains a large collection of artist-to-artist relationships of sample-based music, specifying the origins of borrowed or sampled material on a song-by-song basis. Directed song, artist, and musical genre networ...
متن کاملA Prototype for Visualizing Music Artist Networks
This paper reports on a prototype providing a simple yet efficient interface to navigate through networks of music artists. Built upon data gathered from Last.fm, it provides two simultaneous layers of information: (i) a graph built from artist similarity data, and (ii) overlaid labels containing user-defined tags. Differing from existing artist network visualization tools, the proposed prototy...
متن کاملVisualizing Networks of Music Artists with RAMA
In this paper we present RAMA (Relational Artist MAps), a simple yet efficient interface to navigate through networks of music artists. RAMA is built upon a dataset of artist similarity and user-defined tags regarding 583.000 artists gathered from Last.fm. This third-party, publicly available, data about artists similarity and artists tags is used to produce a visualization of artists relations...
متن کاملAssigning and Visualizing Music Genres by Web-based Co-Occurrence Analysis
Abstract We explore a simple, web-based method for predicting the genre of a given artist based on co-occurrence analysis, i.e. analyzing co-occurrences of artist and genre names on music-related web pages. To this end, we use the page counts provided by Google to estimate the relatedness of an arbitrary artist to each of a set of genres. We investigate four different query schemes for obtainin...
متن کاملThe Semantic Music Store: Managing Distributed Semantic Overlay Networks
Widespread access to the Internet resulted in the explosion of digital music. People continue to download large collections of music files often stored in directory structures classified by artist or genre. A distributed catalog, scalable to a large number of users, storing classification information of each user would prove very useful. Users may search the catalog to identify other users shar...
